Meter Strip

Postage can also be printed directly on the mailing piece using a postage meter.  The meter can be printed directly on the piece or printed on a meter strip, which can be affixed to the piece like a stamp.  Meters are usually printed in red or blue ink, and are most commonly used on envelopes for billing, but can be used for any mailing piece.  Meters are also commonly used for foreign mail as you can apply the exact amount of postage needed.
